Driving License Category C
Commercial driver's licenses are a driving licence of category C. It allows drivers to drive straight buses, trucks and combination vehicles. It also allows drivers to drive passenger vans and small hazardous materials (HAZMAT) vehicles.
Class C license holders, as well as professionals who earn Class CDLs can secure endorsements to increase their qualifications and expand their opportunities for employment. The most popular endorsements include:
Passenger vehicles
When you want to drive a passenger car or truck, or a rental moving vehicle, such as Uhaul or a Uhaul you will require an official class C license. The driver's manual for each state has a comprehensive description of the vehicles which are eligible for. The CDL 1 (also known by the acronym CDL C + E) is the most comprehensive HGV license you can obtain. This licence permits you to drive a vehicle up to a maximum authorized weight of 750kg. This is what the majority of taxi drivers or livery service drivers receive.
In addition to being allowed to operate vehicles with trailers up to 775kg MAM, drivers who have this license can also operate HGVs with small size that carry hazardous materials (with the appropriate placard) and other vehicles that don't fall into Class A or B. This includes dump trucks as well as straight trucks that have trailers. In the United States drivers with a class C license are required to complete additional training in order to be qualified to drive these vehicles.
This license is required for firefighters, emergency/rescue teams, or fire departments. However, it is not required in every jurisdiction. It is a good idea for young drivers to start their journey with this license since it allows them to gain valuable experience in driving and improve their skills before they reach the age for a full licence.
Before they can apply for an intermediate license, drivers under the age of 18 must log 40 hours of driving practice and also hold learners permits for a period of six month. In this period they are not permitted to drive between 11 p.m. between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. except when they are working or school events. They also have to limit the number of passengers to one non-family member less than 19 years old and are only allowed to drive with a supervising licensed driver who is over 21 years old. These restrictions remain in force until the driver reaches 18. Alternately, they can opt to take an advanced course and get an E or class H endorsement to remove these restrictions.
Hazardous materials
A Class C commercial driver's license allows drivers the ability to operate vehicles that do not meet the requirements of Class A or B licenses. This license also permits drivers to operate passenger vehicles with 16 or more passengers, including the driver, as well as vehicles that transport freight classified as hazardous materials (hazmat). Drivers must pass a knowledge exam and undergo specialized training to gain an endorsement on their CDL.
The H endorsement permits a trucker to operate a vehicle that is capable of transporting hazardous materials in placardable quantities. It is only valid if the amount of material being transported is within the limit set by the DOT, the material is properly labeled and classified, and the cargo and vehicle conform to safety regulations. A hazmat employee is required to undergo special training to ensure that the appropriate safety precautions are taken when transporting these substances.
There are additional endorsements available to add to a CDL in addition to the H. The N endorsement allows drivers to operate tanker vehicles that transport sometimes volatile liquids and gasses. To earn this endorsement, truckers must pass a specific knowledge test. The T endorsement allows drivers to operate double or triple trailers which require additional skills and knowledge. The X endorsement requires truckers to pass another specific knowledge test in order to operate tanker vehicles that transport explosive substances.
Every motor vehicle carrying Division 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 materials must be accompanied at all times by the driver or an authorized representative of the motor carrier. This requirement applies to in-state and to interstate transport as well as to shipments that carry dangerous materials.
Truck drivers who drive only for local delivery aren't eligible for the hazmat endorsement. Drivers must have two years of experience in driving to qualify for this endorsement. They must also be in good health and have an impeccable driving record and pass a physical test. They must also be able to pass a drug test as well as an identity check. Drivers who do not meet these standards could face fines or even lose their CDL.
Combination vehicles
Different countries have different licensing regimes. They are based on factors such as age, vehicle type and many more. Some classifications are similar while others are different. For instance, there are certain classes of licenses restricted to those who use taxi services, while other classes are geared towards those who drive passenger vehicles or haul hazardous materials. In the United States, anyone who wants to drive commercial motor vehicles must have a class C license. A class C driver's license allows a driver to drive trailers and trucks with a Gross Vehicle Weight rating of less than 26001 pounds. The driver is also able to transport more than 16 passengers, including the driver. Depending on the state, it may also have a hazmat endorsement or a school or passenger bus endorsement.

Trailers
You may require a licence in order to drive larger vehicles. Depending on the state's regulations the license could be a commercial driver's licence (CDL), or a non-CDL class C license. It is crucial to understand the difference between these types of licences. You can then choose the one that best suits your needs.
A non-CDL Class C license permits the driver to operate vehicles that are not classified as commercial vehicles, or whose gross combined mass rating is less than 26001 pounds. This includes single-axle and multi-axle tractors, trucks with trailers, as well as other large vehicles. In some states, this license permits drivers to operate vehicles specifically designed to accommodate 16 or more passengers.
You'll need category C+E for your vehicle and trailer if they have a maximum authorized weight of more than 750kg. This license will allow you to drive D1 category vehicles in combination with a trailer that has a maximum authorised mass of more than 750kg. It is not necessary to get category C prior to getting the license, but it is highly recommended.
